Does Drinking Water Help Kill Acne

So Does Drinking Water Help Kill Acne?

Well drinking water in and of itself does not kill acne. Acne is caused by a myriad of factors, from the type of skin you have, the amount of acne you genetically predisposed to, if you have a bacterial infection, hormones, and health habits. That being said, drinking adequate water can have a lot of benefits to your body, including potentially reducing the amount of acne.

So How Does Drinking Water Help Kill Acne…Indirectly?

First of all, people with oily skin tend to have more acne than other skin types. If the extra oil (secretions) is due to lack of water and moisturizing, drinking enough water will help add moisture to skincare. The amount of secretion may decrease, thereby reducing the amount of acne that results from it.

About 70% of our bodies are made up of water content.  Water is needed in a plethora of body functions, from digestion, energy production, blood circulation, and excretion.  It is the last process that we are primarily concerned with.  Drinking enough water allows the kidney to filtrate toxins from the blood properly.  Without enough water, there is a high chance that some toxins remain in the body.  These toxins can lead to many health issues, including acne all over the body.  Also, both the kidney and liver perform detoxification functions.

If the kidney is performing optimally, then the liver will take up the slack and vice versa. If the liver has to work more and harder on detox functions, it may neglect other functions.  One of the other functions of the liver is the breakdown and formation of hormones.  So if the liver is overworked, this is one of the processes that may be working at less than ideal performance.  Excess hormones can also contribute to the increased incidence of acne.  This is also the reason that women tend to have breakouts in the period of time leading up to menstruation.

So how does one know if they are drinking enough water? Common convention says people should drink 6 to 8 glasses of water a day. This number is a general guild line. In actuality, the amount of water a person needs is different for each person. Also, for some “glass” may seem vague, because of the size of glasses very as well. A good sign that someone is drinking enough water is that the urine is close to clear. Usually, this is more than the average person drinks.

Though it may feel odd at first, one can gradually increase incrementally how much water one drinks a day until urine runs clear. Start with 5 glasses, then 6, then so on. It is much easier to reach your target water drinking goal that way. After a while, your body will tell you when it needs water. It will be hard to go back to not drinking enough water because you’ll want it after getting used to drinking enough. Drinking too much water can be a bad idea though because it might wash out electrolytes from your system. But most people never get to that point.

Another way to adapt to drinking enough water is to add flavored vitamin tablets. They will give your water a refreshing taste as well as providing you with essential vitamins. Water is also sold in flavored varieties now, from raspberry to citrus, or strawberry, and many more. You might find it a bit easier to swallow. another way to buy a large plastic or Nalgene type water bottle, and make it a goal to finish it. If it’s a challenge, it might be more of an incentive. Or share your goal with a friend – you both get health benefits and built-in motivation.

So, “does drinking water help kill acne?” While just drinking more water may not completely solve an acne issue, it is a powerful step in the right direction.
