Almost half of the populations are under depression, eating disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder. Fluoxetine is used for such treatment.

This medicine helps you to improve your mood, sleep, appetite, and energy level and may help to restore your interest in daily living. It also help to decrease fear, anxiety, unwanted thoughts and the number of panic may also help you to perform repeated tasks (compulsion such as hand-washing, counting, and checking) that interfere with daily living. Prozac may lessen premenstrual symptoms such as irritability, increased appetite, and depression. It also helps to decrease binging and purging behaviors in bulimia.

How to use Prozac

Before knowing how to use Prozac you must read the medication guide provided by your pharmacist. And if you have any question must consult with your doctor.

Take this medicine as directed by your doctor, usually once daily in the morning. If you are taking this medicine twice a day then it must be prescribed by your doctor to take one in the morning and other dose at the noon.

If you are taking this fluoxetine for premenstrual problem then take as your doctor directs you to take. It may be every day of the month or just for the 2 weeks before your periods.

As you are using this medicine in the form of liquid, measure the dose carefully using a specific measuring device/spoon. Do not use your household spoon because you may not get the correct dose.

The dosage which you are taking is based on your medical condition and response to the treatment. To reduce the side effects start your medicine at the low dosage. Or follow your doctor instruction. Take the medicine regularly to get the most benefit from it. Take it as the same time each day.

Don’t stop taking this medicine if you feel well. Do not stop without first consulting to your doctor. Some condition becomes worse when it get stop taking.

You will find some improvement in 1 to weeks. It may take 4 to 5 weeks before you feel the full benefit. Tell your doctor if you find no improvement in your condition or if it became worsens.


You should not use Prozac if you allergic to fluoxetine, if you also take pimozide or thioridazine, or if your been treated with methylene blue injection.

Tell your doctor if you have:

  • Kidney disease
  • Diabetes
  • Cirrhosis of the liver
  • Seizures or epilepsy
  • Manic depression
  • If you are being treated with electroconvulsive therapy (ETC).
