Benzoyl Peroxide (acne prevention)

Benzoyl peroxide is one of the top fighting agents against acne. Those who suffer from acne and skin blemishes may benefit from the use of topical treatments that contain benzoyl peroxide. This was actually one of the first types of acne treatments that became widely available to the public. Unlike other medications and topical ointments that require a prescription, benzoyl peroxide can be purchased over the counter from your local pharmacy.

What is Benzoyl Peroxide?

Benzoyl peroxide works as a peeling agent to clear up minor to major skin blemishes. Acne is caused by bacteria that live on the skin, known as P. Acnes. By applying the ointment to areas that need treatment, the bacteria count is lessened, clearing up the skin. This works by drying up the skin. Different levels of benzoyl peroxide can be purchased, each one stronger than the last. Strengths range from 2.5% to 10%. While 2.5% may be enough for minor acne, 10% works wonderfully for major acne problems. A daily moisturizer should also be applied to reduce dryness, itchiness, and peeling.

Benzoyl Peroxide Side Effects

One of the major side effects that users may experience when treating their acne with benzoyl peroxide is dryness and irritation. This is completely normal and with the right care, should subside in no time. After a few weeks of use, the skin will develop a tolerance to the product and should not cause prolonged irritation.

Other common side effects include itchiness and peeling after application. If excessive drying is noticed, switch to a lower strength of benzoyl peroxide and begin to use a daily moisturizer. By starting out with lower strength and increasing your strength as time goes on, your skin will have time to adjust to the changes and your acne will diminish.

Using Benzoyl Peroxide

Using this topical acne treatment is quite simple. By taking the right steps, you will be preventing future acne from popping up and clearing up the blemishes that are already present. It is first important to wash your face daily, at least two times a day. In the morning, wash your face to remove excess oil and dead skin. Next, apply a moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated. Once the moisturizer has dried, apply the benzoyl peroxide topical treatment.

Only use a small amount and spread evenly over the infected areas. Keep hair away from the face so that the treatment is able to do its job without additional bacteria being spread to the area.
