Why Do I Have Acne During Pregnancy?

Acne during pregnancy is much more common than most women think.  Even if you have never experienced acne before it is very likely you will have acne during pregnancy due the huge increase in hormones.  Acne during pregnancy is caused by Progesterone levels increasing causing the production of much more oil in your body.

You are most apt to get acne during the first three months of pregnancy.  This is when the change of hormone levels in your body is at its greatest.  Cystic acne is the most predominant type of acne found in pregnant women.  There really is no way to prevent getting acne during pregnancy so there is no need to see a doctor or dermatologist if acne develops.  Because of the rapid changes in hormones, you can also experience acne right after your baby is born.

There really are no methods to prevent the acne during pregnancy but there are several steps you can take to assure your skin is clean.

The most important factor in keeping your skin clean is to make sure you are eating a well balanced diet including lots of fresh fruits and vegetables.  Also make sure you wash and then immediately dry your skin and you can even apply an oil free moisturizer.  It is very important to keep your skin clean.

If you do develop acne during pregnancy you should wash you face or other affected area at least twice a day to help your skin stay oil free.  Exercising regularly also helps to keep your body healthy in turn helping the prevention of acne.  And of course do not pick at or rub an affected areas on your skin as it could lead to some serious acne scarring.

You must also remember that trying different methods to cure your acne could be harmful to you but most importantly they can harm your unborn baby.  Do not attempt to take any kind of oral medications because it could be very harmful to your unborn child.  Another method is taking Vitamin A.  If you are pregnant do not attempt to add any extra vitamin A to your diet as it has been proven to cause disabilities and brain problems in unborn children.

 The only oral medication for acne proven to be safe is Erythromycin, but it is pretty unsuccessful in curing many types.  Most doctors will recommend not taking any kind of medications for the treatment of acne during pregnancy.  Always talk to your doctor though to find out what is the best option for you.

If you develop acne during pregnancy, you should avoid the following ingredients in any product: hydrocortisone, adapalene, salicylic acid, azelaic acid.  There has not been enough research done on this ingredients on a woman during pregnancy and should all be avoided completely. 

There was a study done on topical creams during pregnancy and many of the women who used tretinoin had babies with birth defects.  For this reason and lack of research in the area these creams should be avoided.

If you experience this problem you are not alone there are many cases of acne during pregnancy ranging form slight acne to very bad pimples.  It really is unpredictable if you will experience acne during pregnancy and the only thing you can really do is wait and see.  Of course the things listed above to help you keep your skin clean and healthy can help you in preventing the acne but overall if you hormones are going crazy no matter how clean or oil free you keep your skin you will probably experience some acne. 

Most women’s acne during pregnancy will clear up almost immediately after having their baby.
